Goalkeeper Psychology

Goalkeeping is the only position where a mistake almost always ends in a goal. I hold a PhD in Sport Psychology and have worked as a goalkeeper coach at clubs like FC Barcelona, Deportivo Alavés and Riga FC: I work on the goalkeeper's mind from inside the position.

I understand goalkeeping because I've coached it

Goalkeepers live with something no other player has: their mistakes turn into goals, and there are no ninety minutes to make up for them.

Before sitting across from a goalkeeper as a psychologist, I spent years as a goalkeeper coach: I coordinated the 7-a-side goalkeeper department at the Barça Academy (Barcelona and Dubai), was Head of Goalkeeping at Deportivo Alavés and led psychology and goalkeeping at Riga FC. I hold the UEFA GK C licence and spoke at the 2025 Goalkeeping World Congress in Madrid.

That changes the conversation: you don't need to explain to me what it feels like to concede from your own mistake, or what it means to compete all week for a spot that only one of you gets on Sunday.

In sessions we work on what shapes a goalkeeper's performance: handling mistakes and guilt, staying focused through the minutes without action, rebuilding confidence after a bad run or being benched, communicating with the defence and, in youth football, the pressure of the environment — where I also support families.

I work with male and female goalkeepers in football and futsal, from grassroots to professional. In person in Barcelona and Ripollet, or in online sessions from any country.

Frequently asked questions

Works on the mental factors specific to the position: handling mistakes and guilt, intermittent concentration, confidence after a bad run or being benched, and communication with the defence. Goalkeeping has a psychology of its own and deserves position-specific work, not the same approach as an outfield player.

Yes. A large part of my work is with goalkeepers in development and their families. At youth level mistakes weigh even more, because they mix with environmental pressure and the building of a sporting identity. I coordinated 7-a-side goalkeepers at the Barça Academy and know those ages well.

Both. In person in Barcelona and Ripollet, and online with goalkeepers from any country, with the same structure: assessment, work plan and follow-up.

If you decide so, yes. Having been a goalkeeper coach lets me speak the same language as your coach and align the mental work with the on-pitch work. Without your consent, everything discussed in session stays confidential.
